When a mailto link is the wrong tool
A mailto link hands the conversation to whatever mail client the visitor has configured. On a personal laptop that's fine. On a locked-down work machine, a shared computer, or a phone where the default mail app was never set up, the link opens nothing and the message is lost, and you will never know it happened.
The other cost is spam: an address published in a link is trivially scraped. If you'd rather keep the address private and actually know when someone tried to reach you, a small contact form that sends to your email does the same job without publishing the address at all.
